Persistence of Memory

"Persistence of Memory" is a 48x40 mixed on board painting.

"Persistence of Memory" depicts a man and woman crying in anguish before the ruins of the World Trade Center. The artist painted the piece, rendered in a loose, expressive style that recalls the Mexican muralists, for an exhibit about the effects of 9-11.

"What I wanted to paint was the pain that the Mexican people suffered when the tragedy happened," Servin says.

But looking at the brown-skinned figures, he realized there was nothing in the painting to identify them specifically as Mexican. He considered using different symbols to convey their cultural identity, before settling on the jalapeƱo. Servin incorporated the motif into the painting as a pattern on the figures' clothing.
